Back Pain Q & A

What causes back pain?

Acute back pain often develops when a muscle or a ligament is strained. Most of the times it is self-limiting or gets better with simple measures such as heat and anti-inflammatory medications. However, sometimes this pain does not improve on its own and requires further work up and treatment. An underlying disc disruption or degenerative changes in the joints of the spine could be in play. At Texas Pain Intervention Clinic, we often see patients with back pain ranging from sprained ligaments to degenerative and herniated discs causing aching to a shooting, burning or stabbing pain.  At times, the pain may radiate down to your leg when a patient is bending, twisting, lifting, standing or walking. This can be effectively treated with a multimodal approach including medications, PT and injections.

Sometimes, back pain persists despite surgical treatment and can be hard to treat. This can be effectively treated with spinal cord stimulation in conjunction with a multi modal approach.

Back pain treatment options?

Dr. Maheshwari will conduct a thorough history and physical examination. This physical assessment helps to determine the root cause of the pain.  If additional tests are needed, a X-ray, CT scan or MRI, blood tests, bone scan or additional nerve studies may be ordered.  Depending on the diagnosis, Dr. Maheshwari may recommend the following:

  • Over-the-counter (OTC) pain relievers
  • Muscle relaxants
  • Topical pain relievers
  • Prescription pain medications
  • Epidural steroid injection
  • Facet injections or medial branch nerve blocks
  • Spinal cord stimulator
  • Pain pump
  • Regenerative solutions

Physical therapy, psychological counseling and additional procedures may be required to treat back pain such as implanted nerve stimulators, TENS (transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation) or implantable pain pumps.  Dr. Maheshwari and his team work together with the patient’s referring doctors to diagnose, treat and relieve back pain.
